Beat the Heat – Mary’s Magic Formula

In 1985 I worked on a film for Tri Star Productions named Sylvester. It was a movie about eventing which starred Melissa Gilbert and Richard Farnsworth. Most of the filming was done at the Kentucky Horse Park in the heat of the summer, and I learned a great trick for dealing with the heat, I still use to this day. It can work for both humans and horses. I even had a dressage judge tell me she would leave me everything in her will when I gave her my magic solution at a hot hot show in Florida.

During the filming of the event, part of the production company’s support crew had a cooler with ice water and Sea Breeze, and Handi Wipes. We would periodically dip the Handi wipes in the solution and wipe our faces and neck, as well as along our arms, and were instantly refreshed! Kim Walnes, UEST Team event rider was the stunt double in the movie with her World Champion Bronze medalist the Grey Goose, realized the mixture could also help her event horses when applied topically on the pulse zones.

In fact we came to the rescue one year at Young Riders in Colorado when a dressage rider fainted after her test. I checked with an FEI vet who said the ingredients as long as they are applied topically should not test positive for anything forbidden. So give it a try, and let me know what you think! If you have any other tips for Beat the Heat ideas and products let me know.
